Cloud gaming on older TVs — what HDMI 2.0 actually limits

Not everyone has a 2024-model TV. Cloud gaming on older HDMI 2.0 TVs has specific compromises that the marketing doesn't address. Where the older display chain breaks.

What HDMI 2.0 limits

HDMI 2.0 supports 4K at 60 Hz, 1440p at up to 144 Hz, 1080p at higher refresh rates. No HDMI 2.1 features: no ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), no VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), no eARC for advanced audio, no Quick Frame Transport for sub-frame latency.

TVs from roughly 2018-2020 are mostly HDMI 2.0 with various manufacturer extensions. By 2024+ most premium TVs are HDMI 2.1.

What this costs cloud gaming users

No ALLM means the TV doesn't auto-switch to Game Mode for cloud streams. The user has to manually set Game Mode, and it's persistent across sessions (cinema content also shows in Game Mode unless manually switched back).

Higher base input lag. HDMI 2.0 era TVs typically had 30-60 ms input lag in Game Mode. HDMI 2.1 era is 5-15 ms. The cloud session's added latency stacks on top of the TV's contribution.

120 Hz refresh rate at 4K isn't supported (HDMI 2.0 caps at 4K60). Cloud gaming services that offer 120 fps streams can deliver them at 1440p120 but not 4K120 to an HDMI 2.0 TV.

What still works

1080p60 streaming. Cloud gaming at 1080p on an HDMI 2.0 TV works completely fine. The bandwidth, resolution, and refresh rate are all within HDMI 2.0's capabilities.

1440p60 on TVs that support it (most 2018+ HDMI 2.0 TVs do). The visual quality at 1440p is the cloud gaming sweet spot for many setups, and HDMI 2.0 handles it cleanly.

Manual Game Mode. The user toggles Game Mode for gaming sessions and gets near-current-gen latency on the TV side.

Where the lack of ALLM is annoying

Multi-purpose TVs (TV used for streaming video and cloud gaming) require the user to switch Game Mode on and off depending on use. Easy to forget; results in either bad gaming latency or bad film/TV color accuracy.

Cloud session warm-up sometimes confuses the TV's input detection. The TV waits to receive a 'game signal' that triggers Game Mode, but cloud sessions deliver standard video signals. The auto-detect fires inconsistently.

What I'd tell HDMI 2.0 TV owners

Don't upgrade the TV specifically for cloud gaming. The HDMI 2.0 TV is fine. The marginal benefit of upgrading to HDMI 2.1 is modest for cloud gaming use.

Do manually set Game Mode at the start of each cloud session and switch out when done. The habit is annoying but the latency penalty for not doing it is real.

Choose 1440p over 4K for cloud gaming sessions on HDMI 2.0 setups. The bitrate gets allocated better at 1440p, and the TV handles 1440p more consistently than 4K from a streaming source.

Accept that 120 fps cloud gaming requires either 1440p (works fine on HDMI 2.0) or an HDMI 2.1 TV. Don't fight the limitation.

When upgrading makes sense

If the TV is 2017 or older. Significant accumulated improvements in panel technology, processing, and HDMI compatibility make the upgrade worthwhile beyond just cloud gaming.

If you're doing other gaming that benefits from HDMI 2.1 features specifically (4K120 local console gaming, VRR for variable-frame-rate games, eARC for premium audio). Cloud gaming wouldn't justify the upgrade alone.

If your current TV has visible input lag in Game Mode (40+ ms). Some older 2018-era TVs are notably bad on this dimension. Replacing with a current model is a real quality improvement.

What's coming

HDMI 2.2 is being finalized in 2026 and will start appearing in 2027-2028 TVs. The improvements target 8K and beyond plus more bandwidth headroom. For cloud gaming specifically, HDMI 2.2 doesn't add much over HDMI 2.1 because cloud gaming bandwidth caps are set by the cloud service, not by the cable.

The HDMI 2.0 era TVs (2018-2020) will still be in active home use through 2028-2030. Cloud gaming services should not assume HDMI 2.1 universally. The current marketing language sometimes does, which sets up frustration for the meaningful audience still on older displays.
